Additional learning support
At our school, we ensure every student is ready to learn. We support students with disability and additional learning needs so they can take part in all areas of school life. You do not need a formal diagnosis for your child to receive support in a mainstream class. Support can begin at any stage of school.
Aligned to the Care Continuum, our school processes focus on evidence-informed practices designed to create supportive, inclusive and engaging learning environments for all.
Support that fits your child's needs
Some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work hard to ensure plans and adjustments are in place to meet suits each child’s needs. Additional learning support can include:
Where a student has not made adequate progress in literacy or numeracy, they may be identified through school assessment processes to receive additional learning support. Alternatively, there may be challenges socially that your child requires further support with. This additional intervention is generally small-group tuition, taking place either in, or away from the classroom.
Our school offers a range of targeted interventions, some of which include:
- MiniLit - for readers in Year 1 and 2, providing small group, explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, systematic synthetic phonics for reading and spelling, letter formation, and connected text reading.
- Extending Mathematical Understanding (EMU) - is a research-based specialist teacher intervention program for students in the early years that helps to improve children’s knowledge and confidence with mathematics.
- Decodable groups, where students in Years 3-6 have not yet mastered the phonic code
- MacqLit - a structured reading intervention program designed for small groups of older, low-progress readers in Year 3 and above. It focuses on developing word recognition and reading fluency.
- Zones of Regulation - a social-emotional learning curriculum, created to teach children self-regulation strategies and identify and manage emotions.
Where a student requires tailored, individual support for their learning or wellbeing, individual adjustments can be made. An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) or Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) may be developed. These plans ensure adjustments are documented, monitored and evaluated to ensure the child's needs are being met.
If your child meets the Department’s disability criteria, extra support may be provided in mainstream classrooms through other means such as Integration Finding Support (IFS), Itinerant Support Teachers or enrolment in a Supported Learning Class or School for Specific Purposes (SSPs).
A teacher may recommend the service by referring a student to the school’s learning and support team. As a parent or carer, you may refer your child directly to the school counselling service. Students can also self-refer to the service.
The school counselling service can:
- help parents and carers make decisions about your child’s education
- assess a student’s learning and behaviour
- help teachers and students identify and address disabilities that may affect learning
- liaise with other agencies regarding student wellbeing
- provide short-term psychological/counselling intervention
School counselling is confidential.
